How to Measure Your Dog for a Harness

Choosing the right dog harness starts with accurate measurements. Breed and weight can be useful context, but body shape varies, so measuring your dog is the best starting point.

Measure the neck

Use a soft measuring tape around the lower part of your dog's neck where the harness will sit. Keep the tape close to the coat without pulling it tight.

Measure the chest

Measure around the widest part of the ribcage, usually just behind the front legs. Keep the tape level around the body and note the measurement before comparing it with the product size chart.

Check both measurements

Use both neck and chest measurements rather than choosing a size from weight alone. If your dog is close to the edge of a size range, look at how much adjustment the harness provides.

Check the fit

A harness should sit securely without twisting or gaping. The straps should stay in position as your dog walks and should not rub against the front legs. Recheck the fit after the first few walks and as puppies grow.
